We all know we have to eat more vegetables and Spring is the season for succulent Asparagus! This gourmet vegetable will be fresher and more abundant in our grocery stores and markets so don’t forget to pick some up!
It is a healthy vegetable thanks to it’s high fibre content and is good for intestinal health through inhibiting bacterial activity in the intestines. It is also said to be a must- have for nursing mothers as it can stimulate hormones that are essential for lactation. It is also high in vitamins A and K so helps regulate blood pressure and helps with circulation.
However, Asparagus is a diuretic (which can make your urine smell strong) and contains asparagine which can be an irritant so best avoided by people who suffer with inflammatory conditions such as gout, rheumatism and cystitis.
Hope you find time to add asparagus to your menu. It is so versatile and can be added to salads, pasta or tarts. We prefer it lightly steamed with a drizzle of olive oil and black pepper. Yum!
